Endodontic Treatment

Dental tools and tooth model showing internal anatomy used during endodontic treatment (root canal therapy). When the soft tissue inside your tooth becomes infected or severely inflamed, endodontic treatment—commonly known as root canal therapy—may be necessary to save the tooth. At Newington Family Dentistry, we perform gentle, precise endodontic treatment to eliminate infection, relieve pain, and preserve your natural smile for years to come.

What Is Endodontic Treatment?

Endodontic treatment focuses on addressing problems within the pulp, the living tissue inside your tooth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that help the tooth develop. When deep decay, cracks, trauma, or extensive dental work expose the pulp to bacteria, it can become infected or inflamed.

Root canal therapy removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canal system, and seals the inside of the tooth to prevent future infection. The goal of endodontic treatment is to save your natural tooth rather than extract it. Thanks to modern techniques and advanced technology, this procedure is comfortable, predictable, and highly successful.

When Is Endodontic Treatment Necessary?

During your initial consultation appointment, Dr. Dimitri Adamidis will thoroughly evaluate your tooth to determine whether endodontic treatment is needed. This typically includes a detailed examination supported by digital x-rays and 3D imaging to identify infection, inflammation, or structural damage.

We will also review all your treatment options before moving forward. In most cases, root canal therapy is the recommended solution because it preserves the natural tooth. However, if the tooth cannot be saved due to extensive fractures or decay, we may discuss alternative options such as extraction and replacement with a dental implant or bridge.

You may need endodontic treatment if:
•  You are experiencing lingering or severe sensitivity to hot or cold.
•  You have pain when biting or chewing.
•  You notice swelling, a pimple-like bump, or drainage near the tooth.
•  There is deep decay or a large restoration compromising the pulp.
•  A crack or trauma has exposed the inner tooth structure.

The Endodontic Treatment Process

Endodontic treatment begins with the application of local anesthetic to numb the affected tooth. Sedation options are also available if you want a more relaxed and comfortable experience.

Once the tooth is fully numb, we create a small opening in the enamel to access the pulp chamber. Using specialized instruments—often with the aid of a high-powered microscope—we remove the infected tissue and clean the canals thoroughly. The canals are then shaped and filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, which seals and stabilizes the internal structure of the tooth.

After the canals are sealed, we place a temporary filling to protect the tooth. In most cases, the final step is placing a dental crown to restore strength, function, and appearance. We may take an impression of your tooth during this visit so your custom crown can be fabricated for a future appointment.
